Your Social Media Can Reveal More Than You Think

Cybersecurity isn’t only about passwords and software. The information you share publicly can also matter. Think about how much information can be found on someone’s social media profile. Their name, college, birthday, location, friends, workplace, hobbies, photographs, and even travel plans might all be publicly visible. None of these things necessarily seem dangerous on their own, but when combined, they can provide someone with enough information to impersonate you, create convincing scams, or attempt to manipulate you.

This doesn’t mean you need to delete all your social media accounts. It simply means you should think about what information you’re making publicly available. Being careful about what you post, who you accept requests from, and what information you share through messages can make it harder for someone to use your personal information against you.

Common Cybersecurity Mistakes Students Make

There are several simple mistakes that students commonly make without realizing the risks. Using the same password everywhere, downloading cracked software, clicking random links, logging into accounts on unknown computers, sharing passwords with friends, ignoring software updates, and entering personal information into unfamiliar websites can all create unnecessary security risks. Another common mistake is assuming that something is safe just because it looks professional. Scammers can create convincing websites, emails, profiles, and messages, and a professional-looking logo doesn’t automatically mean that the person or organization behind it is legitimate.

The best habit you can develop is simply to slow down when something feels unusual. If someone is pressuring you to act immediately, asking for a password or OTP, offering something that seems too good to be true, or sending you a suspicious link, take a moment to verify it. Cybersecurity isn’t always about knowing complicated technical information. Sometimes, the most useful security tool you have is simply being willing to stop and think before clicking.

How Can Students Protect Themselves?

You don’t need to become a cybersecurity expert to become significantly safer online. Start with a few simple habits. Use strong and unique passwords for important accounts and consider using a password manager. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible. Keep your phone, laptop, applications, and operating system updated. Avoid downloading software from unknown sources, and don’t click suspicious links simply because a message tells you to act immediately.

Be especially careful with requests for passwords, OTPs, UPI PINs, or other sensitive information. Legitimate organizations generally won’t ask you to share such information through random messages or phone calls. It is also a good idea to back up important files. If your laptop is lost, damaged, or affected by malware, having a backup can save you from losing important documents and photographs. Most importantly, develop the habit of thinking before you click.

If you’re interested in technology, cybersecurity isn’t only something you can learn to protect yourself. It can also become a career.
